About
40 Towns is a periodical of literary journalism about the Upper Valley of the Connecticut River. Contributors are students in Jeff Sharlet's creative nonfiction courses at Dartmouth College.
The Upper Valley Chamber of Commerce currently lists 50-some towns in the region, stretching from Walpole, New Hampshire in the south to Ryegate, Vermont in the north. Another source says 44, yet another 42. We're following the lead of the Upper Valley Land Trust, which originally claimed 40. Forty towns, 40 days and nights, 40 years in the desert, 40 days until the resurrection. Forty acres, 40 yards, 40 ounces, 40 nights for ghosts to linger. We're stretching, we know it, but 40 just feels likes a magic number. Some of the stories we've gathered here are fables; several deal with the myths of small places. All of them are true. We've checked the facts, pondered the meanings, studied the juxtapositions. The result is this collection of documents, artifacts of real life along the northern stretch of a cold river.
Read something, say something: let these young writers know what you think. I'll pass it on. jeff.sharlet@dartmouth.edu.
